Outline (in English)

Course Outline -- "Europe has taken an anthropocentric perspective and made a dualistic distinction between humans and nature. This has given rise to a civilization that has caused the environmental crisis we are experiencing today." This discourse is widely known. Why is it, then, that ecology is most seriously discussed in Europe and that environmental protection movements are developing? Isn't there a paradox in this?
In this class, we will first review the current crisis situation regarding nature and the environment. Next, we will begin to analyze ideas in a broad sense (history, religious studies, philosophy, etc.).
By doing so, we aim to obtain certain answers to the following questions.
(1) How has European thought since the latter half of the 20th century viewed human beings, nature, and environment?
(2) How has European thought itself been responsible for the destruction of nature and the environmental crisis?
More specific details are given in the "Class Plan" below, but it should be noted that depending on the interests and knowledge of the participants, we may choose topics that deviate from the syllabus.
Learning Objectives -- The goal of this class is to help students hone their skills in talking about these issues and finding solutions through specific readings and discussions of European philosophy on "nature" and "environment".
Learning Activities outside of Classroom -- Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content. It will be essential to read the texts distributed during class.
Grading Criteria Policy -- Grades will be evaluated comprehensively based on the following factors.
Ordinary points: class participation, mini-tests, reaction papers (60%)
Final exam (40%)
The final exam will be given in person. If not possible, several tests may be given during the semester instead of the final exam. The modality of the test(s) will be announced during the first half of the semester.
