Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This course is to learn the theory and practice of social development.
It is structured as follows:
1. Students will review the definition and the history of social development, the theories that influenced social development, as well as the actors of social development such as government, international agencies, NGOs, etc.
2. Specific issues on social development are examined according to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
3. Several case studies are introduced so that students can discuss the practice of social development.
Students are expected to be cooperative and active during group discussions and presentations.

【Learning Objectives】
1. To acquire basic knowledge of the concept of social development;
2. To understand "poverty" not in terms of dichotomies, such as developing countries and developed countries, people concerned and supporters, and without othering people who are in different positions from oneself; and
3. Use your imagination to realize that social development is something that brings about human change.

【Grading Criteria/Policy】
Grading will be decided based on
1. Mid-term report(30%),
2. Final exam(40%), and
3. submission of feedback paper in each class(30%).
