Outline (in English)

【Course outline】 In this lecture, the activities of citizen movements, NPOs/NGOs, and volunteer groups that are important for solving environmental problems will be discussed from the perspective of "social movements. The purpose of this lecture is to deepen the understanding of contemporary society, social problems, and environmental issues as seen through social movements. The course also aims to cultivate the civic qualities necessary for democratic politics, political participation, and the effective formation of peaceful and democratic nations and societies.
【Learning Objectives】 To understand the various forms of social movements related to environmental issues, the conditions for their activities, and the meanings of their activities. To deepen the understanding of the institutional design of citizen participation in order to build regional communality and publicness. To understand the existence of diverse knowledge about the historical background and future relationship between energy, society, and citizens in Japan.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】 Students are required to prepare and review the materials introduced in each lecture. The standard preparation and review time for this class is two hours each, including reading of the literature referred to in the lecture, comments on each lecture, and submission of assignments.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】 Periodic examinations:70% Ordinary points (additional reports, etc.) :30%.
