Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】 
For better understandings of sustainable world society, this course aim to provide a wide range of knowledge about global environmental politics from viewpoints of discipline of the International Relations
Course topics.
・History of global environmental governance.
・Global climate governance( The Kyoto Protocol, The Paris Agreements).
・Global biodiversity governance.
・Global chemical governance.
・Global environmental governance of SDGs and Plastic issue
・Environmental governance of the European Union.
・Environmental governance in Asia
・Environmental policy in the U.S.
・Transnational environmental governance (Non-state actors, NGOs, Business and local actors).
・Japan's global environmental diplomacy.
・Theories of global governance (Realism, Liberalism, Constructivism and Global governance)
 【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
・Students will be able to understand the mechanisms of consensus building on global environmental issues from the perspective of international relations, using the Paris Agreement, climate change issues, and SDGs as examples.
・To be able to understand the activities of various actors such as international organizations, environmental NGOs, and corporations in relation to global environmental issues.
・To be able to understand recent global environmental governance issues such as SDGs and plastic pollution.
・Understand the global environmental diplomacy of Japan and the United States
・To be able to understand the current status of various environmental governance systems at the regional level in Europe and Asia.
・To be able to understand the perspectives of international relations theory, such as global governance and global environmental governance.
・Students will be able to understand the impact of the Trump and Biden administrations on global environmental policy.
・To be able to understand the mechanism of consensus building on complex issues such as trade and environment, environment and security.
 【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
Be sure to prepare and review the materials introduced in each lecture.
Students should be able to understand each item in the lecture. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
 【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Assessments will be made on the basis of a final exam (90%) and a normal score (10%). The final exam will be a report test. Ordinary points will be based on the submission of small assignments and their contents. Feedback on small assignments will be provided on the class website upon request from students.
