Outline (in English)

【Course Outline】
Being valid in the international society composed of independent and equal sovereign States, international law is a unique legal system that reflects such characteristics of that society. Together with the autumn course “International Law II” (Special Part), this course aims to look through most of the fundamental matters in international law. This spring course (General Part) mainly deals with the following two points: (1) sources of international law and (2) fundamental matters on States, which are the main legal subject in international law, including the law of State responsibility. General Part and Special Part being closely interconnected, students are expected, throughout the year, to enhance their ability to understand and analyze various international problems that arise on a daily basis in the international society.

【Learning Objectives】
At the end of this course, students should be able to explain the fundamental characteristics of international law. Also taking the autumn course “International Law II” (Special Part), they can acquire the skills in understanding and criticizing the media news on international problems from the perspective of international law.

【Learning Activities Outside of Classroom】
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content.

【Grading Criteria】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on your performance in the term-end examination alone. (Term-end examination: 100%)
