Outline (in English)

The purpose of this course is to reconsider the concepts of “region”(or “sub-nation”) and “nation state” by examining the cases of the UK and Ireland. The course will also focus on the relationship between these sub-nations (England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland). At the end of the course, students are expected to understand the societies in the UK and Ireland from various perspectives.

Grading criteria: 1) Term-end examination 50%, 2) Short reports and in class contribution 50%.

Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
