Outline (in English)

Course outline:
The purpose of this course is to critically examine multiculturalism, which was once positioned as a guideline for a multiethnic and multicultural society, and to examine new findings such as "interculturalism" and "multinaturalism" that have been raised since then. Multiculturalism, which recognizes cultural diversity and equality of values, and advocates respect for each other's identity, was the spirit of integration policies in democratic countries, but intolerance and exclusion of others became widespread in Western society, and multiculturalism was recognized as a failure. Why has multiculturalism stalled? What were the factors that led to the regression of social integration through multiculturalism? And what ideas are being proposed today to overcome multiculturalism? In this course, we will discuss the above perspectives, and also consider "multicultural conviviality," which is the Japanese version of multiculturalism.

Learning Objectives:
Based on the historical and social background of the rise and fall of multiculturalism, students will first understand the relationship between (1) multiculturalism and related concepts, and then (2) the mechanisms and factors that led to the failure of multiculturalism in multi-ethnic and multicultural societies from multiple perspectives. In addition, the course aims to provide students with an understanding of (3) the ideological trends of post-multiculturalism.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content.

Grading Criteria /Policies:
Evaluation will be based on the content of the assignment report to be submitted at the end of the semester (100%). The report assignment will be given approximately one month before the due date. The following three criteria will be used in the evaluation of the report (1) whether it is based on the contents of the class, (2) whether the student has a correct understanding of the knowledge acquired, and (3) whether the report is written from the perspective of understanding others, rather than from a self-righteous logical perspective.
