Outline (in English)

On 26 February 2020, in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, the Japanese government requested that arts and cultural activities, along with sporting events, be refrained from being held as "unnecessary". On the other hand, many people who are interested in art and culture have also voiced their opinions, and it can be said that this occasion has made the position of art and culture in Japanese society visible again.
In this class, we will begin by unravelling the current state of arts and culture in Japan by referring to some of the cases that occurred in this situation, and examine the relationship between art and society.

(Learning Objectives)
Students will study from the perspective of management and production that links the arts and society, based on an overview of the current status of the various actors (creators, companies, government, NPOs, etc.) responsible for arts and culture, examples of their initiatives, and their background and history. Students will gain new insights into the diverse relationships between arts and culture and their own lives, including the arts themselves, creative industries, community development, welfare, and education.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students will be asked to research the actual development of the case studies introduced in the class, visit the sites of arts and culture projects (theaters, museums, live performances, festivals, etc.), conduct field research, and summarize their findings in a report.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Comprehensive evaluation will be made based on the final examination (30%) and regular marks (70%) such as in-class small reports (reaction papers) and assignment reports.
