Outline (in English)

The Tokugawa regime maintained peace for 260 years. This is called "Pax Tokugawa". The warrior class (samurai) worked as politicians and bureaucrats in this period within a rigid social structure. Bushido was understood as the discipline of samurai's life. This course aims to examine the samurai of the Edo period from the cultural point of view. We will look at the norms of the samurai class including the protocol of high ranked samurai at Edo castle and also the real life of middle and lower ranked samurai, for example food, clothing and so on. We will examine the famous incident known as "Chūshingura", or “the 47 Ronin”, in the second half of the class.
