Outline (in English)

The rapid development of life sciences in recent years, including the field of genetic engineering, has brought about technological innovation not only in basic biology but also in medicine and agriculture, and has come to have a great impact on society as a whole. This course outlines the basics of modern biology, focusing on cytology and molecular biology, so that you can understand the basic concepts of biology and acquire the literacy of life science.

The goals of this course are to understand the basic concepts of biology and to have your own thoughts on current affairs related to life sciences.
Before class, you will be expected to read reference books to prepare for what will be covered in class, if possible. After each class, you will be expected to read the handout and answer quizzes uploaded to learning management system. Your study time will be two hours for a class.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following. Quizzes after each class: 60%, term-end examination: 30% and in-class contribution: 10%. If the criteria and policy are changed, it will be presented to learning management system.
