Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In this class, you will learn "how chemistry influence our daily lives" based on principles and methods of chemistry. You acquire the scientific thinking and problem solving skills.

【Learning Objectives】
1. Basic knowledge of chemistry, especially units and physical quantities, and how to handle and calculate them.
2. How to find and use scientifically reliable information such as papers.
3. Ability to understand familiar phenomena from a scientific perspective, think about them, and explain them in one's own words.
4. Ability to logically consider and propose solutions to various problems related to science and the environment.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
The standard study time outside of class time for preparation and review for this class is 4 hours. The content of this class is designed so that even if you were not good at chemistry in high school (or even if you have not taken chemistry at all), you do not need to have a solid understanding of chemistry up to high school. You will be given two or three exercises, all of which require you to think for yourself and explain in your own words. It is not enough to do a little research on the Internet, so please take the time to examine the information, construct your logic, and prepare highly original answers.

【Grading Criteria/Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end examination: 40%, Short reports: 30%, in class contribution: 30%
