Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This course introduces biodiversity science to students. Biodiversity science is an emerging and highly integrative field of research dealing with all aspects of biological diversity and the relationship among living organisms. It also deals with the history of life in the world and the cause of why various organisms and their relationships have been originated and maintained on earth. This course will incorporate ecological and evolutionary perspectives to understand the various subjects such as the tree of life, the taxonomy of organisms, biological interaction, animal communication, social behavior, sexual reproduction, and sexual dimorphism. We will also address approaches and techniques for the analyses of ecology, ethology, phylogeny, and evolutionary biology.

【Learning Objectives】
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
A. Understand the sources of genetic variation, evolutionary process, and consequent biodiversity.
B. Explain the importance of biological interactions and signals for social behavior.
C. Show the methods of how to draw a timeline of the history of life on earth.
D. Explain why sexual reproduction and dimorphism are present in many organisms.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before and after each class meeting, students will be expected to read the handouts. You will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your required study time is about four hours for each class meeting.

【Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the assignments and reports (50%) and term-end examination (50%), and in-class contribution.
