Outline (in English)

Modern Japan has sent many migrants to various regions across the globe. Similarly, many have migrated to and settled in Japan, and the number is expected to increase in the future. In this class, we will discuss the human migration from/to Japan from the Meiji era to the present.

As the students learn how human migration in the past and present have made Japanese society a diverse one, they deepen the understanding of race and ethnicity and of freedom and human rights. They also learn to read historical materials, both texts and statistical data.

The students are expected to read the assigned material before the lecture.

The final grade will be calculated based on the final exam (70%) and minute papers assigned every week (30%)
