Outline (in English)

"Water" is an indispensable entity for mankind and a fundamental substance of all industries. Therefore, the pollution of rivers and lakes, which are water sources, has an effect on living environments. In this class, you will learn about the basic characteristics of water and its analytical methods. You will study the evaluation method of natural water sources, and the treatment method for polluted water.

The first lectures will be an overview of the water environmental problems. The following lectures are to learn about the basic characteristics of water, its analytical methods, the evaluation method of natural water sources, and the treatment method for various polluted waters. Some advanced topics regarding water environmental problems will be also addressed and discussed. Students will make presentations and report about assigned themes in water environmental problems, and the treatment method for various polluted waters.

The goals of this course are to
(1) be able to explain the basic characteristics of water and its analytical methods
(2) be able to explain the evaluation method of natural water sources
(3) be able to devise a treatment method for various polluted waters.

Students are expected before each class to review fundamental chemistry, analytical chemistry, and environmental chemistry.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.

Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following.
Reports: 50%, Presentation: 50%.
