Outline (in English)
Originally, chemical engineering deals with designing a chemical plant and operating the entire system with the less environmental load. The basic principle of chemical engineering is composed of transport phenomena, chemical thermodynamics, and chemical reaction kinetics. It has been a critical issue to describe chemical reactions mathematically; however, it may be all right in most cases by introducing relatively bold assumptions for this purpose. This special lecture teaches how to model real systems mathematically without losing reliability.

化学工学は元来化学工場を設計運転するための学問であり、その根幹をなすのは輸送現象論、化学熱力学、および反応工学といわれている。化学反応をいかにして数学的に取り扱うは大きな問題であるが、比較的大胆なモデルを導入しても、大半の現象を説明することができる。本講義ではそのモデル化の手法を中心に理解を進める。

反応工学的な数学モデルの組み立て、およびその解の導出・運用を通じて、簡単な実装置の設計ができるようになる。
To design a simple yet realistic system that involves a chemical reaction by introducing a solution of the mathematical model assembled from the chemical reaction engineering point of view.

学部の講義で学んだ基本的な物質収支の復習から始め、その概念の化学反応系に対する応用を考える。基本的な数学および物理化学の理解は必須である。また、常微分方程式の数値解法に習熟していることが望ましい。
なお、本講義は、教室での対面式、またはハイフレックス（対面式＋オンラインライブ配信）方式での実施を原則とし、教材、板書、講義とも、総て英語のみで行う。
Starting from a simple material balance learned in undergraduate chemical engineering courses, students should learn its application to a system in which a chemical reaction plays a significant role. Therefore, understanding basic mathematics, as well as physics, is necessary. Since deriving and solving differential equations are often involved in the designing procedure, advanced calculus, including numerical technique, would help to understand the subject.
This course is taught either in classroom or high flex (on-line live) and is exclusively taught in English.

【本授業の準備・復習時間は、各４時間を標準とします。】多くの課題では、Microsoft Excelを用いて常微分方程式の数値解を導出する。また、教材、講義が総て英語なので、英語での講義に慣れていることが望ましい。
Since numerical solutions play a significant role in many problems dealt in class, students are required to use Microsoft Excel for this purpose. Also, since all the materials are given in English, students are requested to be familiar with technical terms in English.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
１回２５％換算、合計４回の課題の提出による。
Students must hand in all four take-home examinations, 25% each.

練習問題がやや挑戦的であるが、ヒントがない方が良いという指摘を受けて、真に考える講義を目指す。
Although all the problems are a little challenging, no hints are suggested by the previous students. Since modeling is a real thinking process for solving a given problem, we are moving toward a real thinking class.

その他の重要事項Others
他の講義よりも内容に切れ目がないため、１回の欠席で内容の把握が著しく難しくなることがある。毎回の授業の冒頭で行う、「前回の復習」の理解が次の理解への鍵となる。
Students may get lost even if one class is missing because the course is composed of more consecutive materials. Reviews at the beginning of each class will be a key to the next material.
