The overall objective of the class is for students to become more confident in speaking and writing about topical issues. Students will demonstrate improved speaking, listening, writing and reading skills.

The overall objective of the class is for students to become more confident in speaking and writing about topical issues. Students will demonstrate improved speaking, listening, writing and reading skills.
Students will acquire accurate and varied vocabulary to
discuss current issues. Students will acquire basic presentation skills and be able to participate in discussions. Students will be able to organise short paragraphs to express their thinking on topical current issues.
授業の目的は、学生が、時事問題についてより自信をもって話し書くことができるようになることです。

Students will be introduced to a topical issue through a reading or listening. Vocabulary and /or grammar structures that are featured in the text will be reinforced in guided exercises, then discussion of the topic will be done in groups. Skills in academic writing and presentation will then be introduced and students will demonstrate those skills.

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Many of the readings will be given as pre-class preparation. Some preparation of writing and presentations will be done outside class.
The tasks set as preparation are expected to take the students thirty to forty-five minutes a week. The mid-semester and final speech assignments are expected to take about two to three hours, including drafting and final revision before completion. With revision for the final written test included, this should be around 14-15 hours of work to be done outside class over the course of the semester.

There will be no textbook required for the class. Handout reading materials adapted from printed and online media and practice materials will be distributed.

As materials will be in handout form, it is important that students acquire a suitable stationery item to store the handouts and keep them organised for easy reference. A notebook or equivalent to take notes, write example sentences and drat writing will also be essential.

Students cannot get a credit unless they complete their Academic Express selected training and take the TOEIC test held at Hosei university.
