Outline (in English)

【Course Outline】
Elementary concepts of thermal physics and statistical physics will be explained. These are essential to understand thermal phenomena. Especially, "entropy", which is related to the irreversible process, will be main topic in this class. Information entropy will be briefly discussed.

【Learning Objectives】
1. To understand the fundamentals of thermal physics and statistical physics, which are the essential to understand/explain the state of matter in our real world.
2. To learn the relationship between the macroscopic equilibirum and the microscopic number of states, which leads to the concept of statistical "entropy".
3. To be familiar with the information entropy as well as thermal/statistical entropy.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students will be expected to have completed the required assingments after each class meeting. Four hours will be your standard study time for this class.

【Grading Criteria/Policies】
Overall grade in this class will be decided based on the followings;
Assingments: 15%, Quizes in each class: 15%,
Mid-term examination: 20%, Final examination: 50%
