Outline (in English)

We study the topology of closed surfaces with the help of polygon diagrams. The diagrams have nice data representations and are ready to be handled by any computer algebra systems such as Mathematica, python + sympy, and others. We choose Mathematica as our main tool to attack various problems in topology. The first half part of this course is dedicated to the classification theorem for closed surfaces. We will obtain a complete catalog of closed surfaces, or compact 2-manifolds. To put in other words, we obtain a complete list of possible two dimensional spaces without boundaries or pin holes, at every point of which there is an open disk neighborhood. They are topologically distinguished by their orientability and Euler characteristics. Both are topological invariants that completely determined the topology of a closed surface. The second half of the course is dedicated to the design of algorithms and their implementation. Mathematica comes into play with symbolic computation and graphics functions. Students will obtain both theoretical and algorithmic insights for the topology of closed surfaces.
Students will be able to calculate Euler characteristic of a closed surface via polygon diagrams.
They will also be able to describe a complete catalog of closed surfaces. All these abilities are checked by the term examination (50%) and the weekly assignments (50%),
in each of which an average student spends four hours.
