Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Researches and developments have been actively performed to improve aerodynamic performances of aircrafts, automobiles, and fluid machineries such as a gas turbine and a wind turbine by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to solve various environmental problems. Most of the external and the internal flows encountered in such machines are turbulence which exhibits a highly complex, chaotic and random state of fluid motion. This course provides important topics concerning fundamental properties of turbulent flow field and modeling of turbulent flow which is based on the extraction of universal properties in turbulent phenomena and necessary to economically obtain numerical solutions with high accuracy.
【Learning Objectives】
After completing this course, students should be able to:
- Explain the difference in the properties of laminar and turbulent flows and the wide range of eddy size and the Reynolds averaged flow field in turbulent motion.
- Discuss the meaning of turbulence model in the numerical analysis by observing the common time-averaged property in the fundamental flows such as the flat plate boundary layer, the pipe flow, the jet and the wake.
- Describe the characteristics of all sorts of turbulence models.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 4 hours to understand the course content.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Students who achieve a total of 60% or more will pass the course.
