Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to help students acquire an understanding of the history of French philosophy from a viewpoint of the salvation "other" as the victim of our social structure based on the "modern ego". It deals with four themes as follow: 1. the discovery of the "ego" by Descartes and its influences as the human mechanistic theory and the religious skepticism, 2. the scientific movement by the enlightenment thinkers and its negative results such as the terror politics and the monitoring system, 3. Diderot's philosophical interests to "others", including the disabled persons are removed outside of the modern image of a human being, 4. the attempts to salve "other" by the contemporary existentialists, namely Sartre and Levinas. By the end of the course, students should be able to give careful consideration to the social inequalities are caused from our common sense about the relations between "ego" and "other". Before each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content. Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: term-end report: 70%, and in class contribution: 30%.
