Outline (in English)

In this course we learn basic ideas of western ethics and its history. Then we will be able to reflect on our actions ethically.
As humans, we exist not only in the world of facts but also in the world based on norms and values. Because we make judgments about human acts such as “You should never do that”. The fact of this judgment has already meant that we are somewhat “ethical”. So western ethics investigates grounds of our “ethical” judgments. In this sense, western ethics is the discipline to clarify what we should do and how we should act.
Western ethics is also familiar to us. Because this ethics deals with questions that everyone of us faces such as “why we should not lie ?” and “what is a good life ?”. However, in order to answer these questions “seriously”, basic knowledge of ethics is necessary. Therefore, in this course we will learn important ideas related to our ethical judgments. In addition, since western ethics has a long history, we will learn thoughts of the past philosophers.
