Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This course will focus on aspects of the modern Islamic world. Since the 18th century, the Islamic world has been exposed to the wave of modernization (= westernization), and trials and errors have been carried out on how to connect modern society with Islam. This activity is still in progress in the 21st century. In this course, we aim to promote understanding of various Islamic topics taken up in the media, including their historical background, and to provide a perspective that relativizes general Islamic perceptions.
【Learning Objectives】
This course provides students with basic knowledge of the history, culture, and religion of the Islamic world. Based on this knowledge, students are expected to understand Islamic society and the diversity of Muslims. By the end of the course, students should acquire the ability to think independently about issues related to the complex Islamic world of today from a broad and unbiased perspective.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
The key words related to the next class will be presented in class, so
researching and deepening your understanding of them will serve as
preparation. Reviewing and re-examining each paper will also serve as
a review. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2
hours each.
