Outline (in English)

This is a "special topics" course focusing on American Christmas stories. Beginning with a historical survey of Christmas and its process of Americanization, the course offers a close reading of various short stories. Through an intensive discussion on literary and visual texts, students develop their skills to analyze cultural products in a critical way with focus both on their individuality and historicity.

Most classes consist of quizzes, lectures, group discussions, and in-class writing assignments. In particular, students participate in many group discussions on the topics introduced in the lectures.

Students should complete reading assignments before the class in which they are discussed (approximately four hours to spend).

Grades will be determined based on the following:
1) Quizzes, assignments, and participation (40%)
2) Final exam (60%)
