Outline (in English)

Students learn to carry to a higher level the skillful analysis of language and text, by (participating in) close reading of Edgar Allan Poe's gothic fiction and criticism. Students also obtain knowledge about literary gothicism and about its developments, and about Poe the poet.
[Objective] The principal objective of this class is to obtain a number of points of view on reading Poe (as a gothic story-teller and poet). Students will learn various literary traditions and various world-views, including philosophical, aesthetic, mystic, even occult ones. We will read short stories by Poe, and read various approaches applied to the tales.
[Learning activities outside of classroom:] Before/after each class meeting, students are expected to spend 2 hours respectively to understand the course content.
[Grading Criteria/Policies:] Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: in-class contribution [positive participation] (20%),final report [paper] (80%).
