Outline (in English)

[Outline and objectives:] This course presents a historical survey of American literature from the period of exploration and settlement to the present. Students will study works of fiction, poetry, drama, and prose in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. The course aims at considering "what is the Americanness of American literature."
[Learning activities outside of classroom:] Before/after each class meeting, students are expected to spend 2 hours
respectively to understand the course content.
[Grading Criteria/Policies:] Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
1) Participation and discussion (reaction papers and occasional mini tests) (20%)
2) 3 papers ("reports" on reading American literary work) (40%)
2) End-of-term examination (40%)
