Outline (in English)

Outline and objectives: This lecture treats the history of English and British literature from the era of the Old English (the early Medieval period) to the early 19th century, with the background of such historical incidents as the Unification of England, the Norman Conquest, the Hundred Years' War, the English Reformation (the Establishment of the Church of England), the Rise as a Maritime State, the English Revolution, the Formation of the Parliamentary System, the Agricultural Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, the Formation of the United Kingdom. In particular, this lecture selects works having relevance to the English national identity, and in doing so, explains how literature relates to the overall historical trends and how a literary work reflects the national identity of the era when it was created.

Learning activities outside of classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend a total of four hours to understand the course content.

Grading Criteria/Policies: Final grade will be calculated according to the following process: Mid-term report and in-class contribution (50%), term-end examination (50%).
