Outline (in English)

[Outline]
On this course students practise in literary translation (from English to Japanese), with a view to improving their reading skills in English. Developing the ability to be sensitive to voices, nuances, and psychologies 'archived' in the written, literary text is the key to this particular approach to improving reading skills. The steps taken involve translating English texts into Japanese in ways that make the translated Japanese texts sound authentic and natural as Japanese texts, and reading the feel of that authenticity and naturalness back into the original English texts. This is a seminar and students are encouraged to actively engage themselves in these tasks so that they discover the significance and utility of this approach, as well as actual techniques that help facilitate the learning process based on it. Equally important, students are encouraged to first learn from their peers' work, not from the teacher. The teacher comments on students' works at the end of the class to sum up what they have learned in that class. The novel we are going to read is The Dwarves of Death (1990) by Jonathan Coe, a contemporary English novelist.
[Goal]
The objectives of this course are for students to acquire proficiency in reading literature in English, and then on that basis to learn skills for translating English texts into natural and persuasive Japanese that vibrates with voices and nuances of the original English texts integrated into it. Through the acquisition of translation techniques and with a new awareness of the two languages that it brings about in them, students go back to the original English texts and aim at achieving higher levels of reading comprehension.
[Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)]
Every week students first read designated parts of the novel and then translate into Japanese passages that the teacher designates. Students make weekly progress as they put into practice what they have previously learned when they work on new assignments. For reading the novel and translating, students allow for 2 hours per week; for revision after each session, e.g., organising notes, students allow for another 2 hours.

Written assignments (translation) 80 %, observations made in class on peers' work 20%.
