Outline (in English)

Outline: This is an undergraduate-level lecture giving an overview of Japanese music from the ancient to early medieval period, while interpreting the depiction of music in classical literary works. In the spring semester, we center on the question “What is Japanese music?” by learning about gagaku, Buddhist music, Heike-gatari and so on. We objectively consider these genres of “Japanese music” in relation to foreign cultures and learn about their universal and unique characteristics.
Goals: By the end of the course, students should have deepened their understanding of the following:
- The basics of ancient and medieval Japanese music history.
- The depiction of music in classical literary works.
- The relationship between Japanese music and foreign cultures.
- The universality and objectivity of Japanese music.
Learning activities outside of classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policies: In accordance with the above goals, the following two elements will be graded:
- Subtasks/Questions (60%).
