Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This lecture introduces the method for reading the poems of Man’yōshū. We use the textbook cited in the Japanese syllabus.
Learning Objectives: Through the process of reading man’yō-ka, which were written in kanji (Chinese characters) over a thousand years ago, students learn the uta-kotoba (words for man’yō-ka) of Old Japanese. By reading the textbook and listening to the instructor's commentary, students learn how to discover problems, collect materials, set out arguments, and draw conclusions. Students acquire the ability to think flexibly from different perspectives.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class, students need to read the textbook. As preparation and review of the class, students will be expected to spend about 2 hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: assignment (comments, thoughts, etc.) at each class meeting (50%), term-end report (50%).
