Course Outline: This course introduces the style of stories called “first-person novels” written after the 1890’s. We learn about its position in the history of literature, and analyze examples in terms of the expression of perspective.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
・Understand the role of narrative in novels.
・Explain the relation between narrative and theme in novels.
・Write analytical papers of their original thought using the theory learned in class.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom:
Preparation: Students read each novel and think about the characters and the narrator in the novel.
Review: Students write and upload a short paper after each class meeting.
Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Your final grade will be calculated according to the following process: regular short papers (50%); final paper (50%).
