Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Consideration of Human Rights in Modern Literature When we read modern literature, we find that the human problems depicted in the works are very similar to those in Japan today. The similarity is that those who deviate from the goal of a competitive society to achieve social success, or those who cannot keep up with society, do not know what to do to support themselves or how to live if they are abandoned by society. It can be said that it was modern literature that challenged the cruel modern view of human beings that such socially useless people have no value, and constantly questioned the issue of human rights, which is a universal value of human beings. In this class, we consider representative writers of modern literature, such as Higuchi Ichiyō, Natsume Sōseki, Mori Õgai, Shiga Naoya, and Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, from this point of view.
Learning Objectives: The goals of this course are to understand the critical nature of literature, to learn about the historical significance of modern literature, and to learn about the basics of textual analysis.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students will be expected to read the works to be covered in the class well in advance. (Read them at least twice.)
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on what you write in reaction papers for each lecture (50%), and an end-of-semester examination, in which you will be asked about what you learned in class (50%).
