Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This course deals with the problems that occurred when Tanizaki Jun'ichirō's novels were made into movies. It also explains censorship and bias of expression with film-making, and actresses’ performance. We discuss the new aspects of the film adaptation of literature and its ripple effects, as well as the representation of actresses reflecting social situations.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
- Analyze the writer's discourse objectively.
- Interpret primary sources in history.
- Explain about censorship by GHQ/SCAP.
- Use knowledge of postwar culture to discuss works.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 2 hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: term-end examination (50%), in-class contribution (50%).
