Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This course will focus on Tanizaki Jun’ichirō's short stories about popular culture of the 1910s and 20s. Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, one of Japan's leading novelists, actively incorporated the latest culture and art into his works. By learning about its subcultural elements, gender and sexual expression, and cross-media activities, students develop a critical eye for modern and contemporary culture and society. They also learn about pre-war censorship and established morality.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
- Analyze the writer's discourse objectively.
- Interpret the primary sources in history.
- Explain about censorship by the Home Ministry.
- Use knowledge of modern culture to discuss works.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 2 hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: term-end examination (50%), in-class contribution (50%).
