Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this course, we will read Makura no sōshi (“The Pillow Book”) written by Sei Shōnagon. By reading the text carefully, students will understand what the work achieved. They will also acquire knowledge about the history, customs and practices of the Heian period, which is essential to understanding Japanese classical literature.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students should have attained the following:
1. An accurate knowledge of classical Japanese grammar.
2. An understanding of the points of appreciation of Japanese classical literature through close reading.
3. A deep knowledge of issues required for reading Japanese classical literature, such as history, gender, and customs.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class, students will be expected to have read the distributed resumé and references related to the topic. Study time will be more than two hours for each class. After the class, students should review the lesson content, summarize their own thoughts, and deepen their understanding. They should also think about the contents, and prepare questions to ask in the next lecture. Study time will also be more than two hours for each class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Students’ overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: term-end report (30%), short reports (60%), attitude and positiveness of efforts in class (10%).
