Course Outline: This seminar deals with the basic concepts and principles of literary creation. As a rule, novels are written by one person. One of the requirements for writing is to have read many novels. There is no such thing as a general way to write a novel; each novel has its own methodology. However, there is no doubt that the basic principles are to feel words, to enjoy literature, and to express words beautifully. In this seminar, we will examine the basics of writing and standard models of literary works from various angles. In addition, students will be provided with appropriate advice based on the instructor’s editorial experience of witnessing the debut of many new writers, including Yoshimoto Banana and Shimada Masahiko. The goal is for students to produce an original work that only they can write.
Learning Objectives: While experiencing the interest and depth of literary works such as novels and poems, students will learn how their own words and works are understood, accepted, and evaluated by readers (others), and acquire the expressive and creative skills to write an original novel as their graduation project.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are required to read assigned books and texts, as well as undertake creative writing. The standard time for preparation and review is two hours each for each class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: This course will be graded as follows: class participation (50%), assignments and literary creation (50%).
