Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Students learn concrete methods to comprehend, analyze, and evaluate the works of many Japanese writers from the beginning of the Shōwa era through the postwar period to the present age. Through examination of the writers’ lives, the subjects and motivations of their works, their historical backgrounds, influences, styles, etc., students will acquire the ability to properly evaluate them.
Learning Objectives: Students will discover a theme for their graduation thesis and develop the ability to write it.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: The presenter researches and examines the work, and prepares a resume. It takes about 5 hours to do this. Other students will submit a short report, which will take about 3 hours.
Grading Criteria/Policy: I will evaluate the level of the presentation and remarks at 70%, 20% for the final report, and 10% for the short report.
