Outline (in English)

Course Outline: We study early modern (Tokugawa period) literature, focusing on Ugetsu monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain) by Ueda Akinari.
Learning Objectives: The goals of this course are to learn how to read works of the period, discuss them, and communicate one's analysis to others orally and in the form of a report.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Preparing presentations on allocated sections. In addition, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter(s) from the text before each class meeting.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Presentation in class (35%); final report (35%); and attitude in class (30%).
