Outline (in English)

Course outline: We will read Taizo KIJIMA's book『自由意志の向こう側:決定論をめぐる哲学史』(Beyond Free Will:Referring to The History of Philosophy around Determinism)'. This book deals with the modern "free-will debate" by considering it having been a debate over the naturalistic view of humanity against the background of the decline of the teleological view of nature. This book, and also this seminar, treats various topics from the ancient philosophy to the modern evolutionary studies of human nature. Our aim is to understand various problems treated in it, and thereby to consider and discuss them.

Learning Objectives: The goals of this course are the followings:
(1) to learn about the topics on free-will problem and naturalistic view of humanity,
(2) to acquire the skill to explain these topics for the classmates,
(3) to acquire the skill to discuss on these topics, and
(4) to acquire the reflective skill to rethink various perspectives.

Learning activities outside of classroom: Every student will read the relevant sections in the text and consider problems presented in it. When you will be a reporter, you will produce the abstract of the relevant sections of the text and prepare to present your report. When you will be an queationer, you will prepare to ask your questions. When we will have to read other literature in the class, another student will report about this. Before/after each class meeting, you will be expected to spend at least four hours.

Grading Criteria /Policies: Final grade will be calculated based on your accomplishment as a reporter or a questioner (50%) and your attitude in the in-class discussions (50%) .
