Outline (in English)

This course elucidates the concept of human dignity. Human dignity means the absolute value of human being. And it is also ground to respect a human being. Recently in Japan, human dignity came to be mentioned by laws to regulate the use of the new biotechnology. However, there is no agreement about what human dignity means. Therefore, considering arguments of western philosophy and applied ethics, this course presents meanings of human dignity. Being a concept which derives from western thoughts, human dignity came to attract attention as a basis of fundamental human rights after World War Ⅱ. But there is severe criticism against this concept. In this course you will discuss with human dignity in various contexts of applied ethics and finally think about human absolute value.
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
A. Students will be able to explain the content of the concept of human dignity.
B. Students will be able to understand the issues of applied ethics, such as selective abortion and death with dignity, and explain the significance of the concept of dignity in these issues.
C. Students will be able to verbalize and express their thoughts on selective abortion and death with dignity.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours understanding the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following.
Term-end report: 60%、Short reports and in class contribution: 40%.
