Outline (in English)

[Course Outline]
This is a first part of the course on the economy and society of developing countries. Students will be able to obtain a reference framework and to understand basic structure of developing countries' economy including particular historical, cultural, and geographical settings. Those basic knowledge are also the basis for understanding the various issues/goals set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

[Learning Objectives]
The objectives of this lecture are to a) learn about the analytical framework and characteristics of developing economies, b) learn about the characteristics of the economies and societies of major regions and major countries, c) better understand the position of Japanese society and economy in the world, and d) be able to communicate meaningfully with people in other countries based on basic knowledge in the future.

[Learning Activities outside of classroom]
Students are required to prepare for and review the materials introduced in each lecture.
It is necessary to refer to the relevant parts of the reference literature and reference books specified for each lecture before and after the lecture to deepen understanding of the lecture contents. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

[Grading Criteria/Policy]
Grading will be based on mid-term report and final exam. Grading will be based on mid-term report 20%, final exam 80%.
If face-to-face classes and final examinations cannot be held due to the spread of coronavirus infection, the grading system may be changed to one based on report assignments. If this is the case, the grading method will be announced through the learning support system (Hoppii).
