Outline (in English)

This class addresses mathematical theories and techniques associated with industrial and systems engineering. Among others, optimization problems relevant to maximization, minimization, and extreme problems are particularly central. While the associated techniques would be classified as applied mathematics, we will rather focus on applications to engineering than mathematical rigorousness.

[Learning objectives]
Upon completion, students should be able to
1. understand the underlying concepts and meanings associated with vectors and matrices
2. utilize various approaches to solve various optimization problems
3. apply the acquired skills to information engineering and mathematical engineering

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
1. Students should spend four hours for preparation and review.
2. Prerequisites:
(1) Calculus (differentiation of a multivariate function)
(2) Linear algebra (elementary transformation, eigenvalue problem)

[Grading criteria]
The final evaluation will be conducted according to:
mid-term exam (45%), Final exam (45%), and two quizzes (10%)
