Outline (in English)

【Course outline】 In this course, we will study the history of tourism in French-speaking countries (not only in France, but also in Switzerland, and Belgium), including the tourist spot in the different genres of the natural landscape: mountains, seas, forests, rivers, lakes, and hot springs. Finally, we will consider the origin of the leisure idea, as locus amoenus: the Fortunate Isles, until its antithesis: the catastrophic landscapes.

【Learning Objectives】 Understand the cultural history from the perspective of the derivation and development of tourist resorts in France with examples of related works of art (paintings, literature, music, architecture) based on the social ideas at that time.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】 Find out what you're curious about, or walk around the places you came up with in class on Google Street View. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 1 hour each.

【Grading Criteria / Policy】 Evaluation based on 30 percent for class participation and 70 percent for reports.
