Outline (in English)

This course deals with various aspects of lives in France with the aide of movies. France is one of the most movie-loving countries. The French government gives a large sum of subsidies to movie-makers. Through films we see different aspects of lives in France, problems, people's joys, sorrows, and pains. In this course, the students not only learn characteristics and history of French movies but reflect on these subjects, which we can find in films.
The goals of this course are to get knowledge about French films and to analyze differences between them and films of other countries, as well as to reflect on various problems in the French society.
The students are expected to see a whole film, which we can see only partially during the class, and to make some researches on subjects concerning social or historical backgrounds of the film. After each film, the students must submit an assignment. This work will require two hours for each class.
Final grade will be calculated according to the total score of assignments (100%).
This course is designed for all students who are interested in France; the knowledge of the French language is not indispensable.
