Outline (in English)

【授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)】Outline and objectives
This course aims to promote students' understanding of French society, politics, and news media. An emphasis is placed on oral communication and using specialized vocabulary. By participating in proposed activities, students will become familiar with French-speaking news websites.

【到達目標】Goal
The goals to be achieved differ according to the starting level of the student.

* Learning objective for false beginners and intermediate learners: the student will be able to acquire, at the end of the two semesters of "Jiji-Furansugo", a linguistic ability equivalent to level A2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages or to Futsuken jun 2 kyû.

** Pedagogical goal for those who already have a more or less good command of the French language (learners at the higher level as well as French-speaking international students): the student will be able to formulate relevant comments that demonstrate a solid understanding of local and global issues covered by the French-speaking media.

【授業の進め方と方法】Method(s)
In each class session, the teacher will suggest materials available on the Internet. Learners will be asked to identify the essential elements. To do so, they are allowed to consult books and dictionaries written in their respective first language (the "mother tongue"). However, all participants are expected to express themselves in French, and to contribute to the discussion on what is said in the material.

【授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)】Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
1) Try to make use of the learning materials yourself. The URLs for these materials are already listed in the Dashboard for Jiji-Furansugo. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dU6ltm5to96nAp7FNHAVAEhjQHwkfBLFzVXmd8pn3CM/edit?usp=sharing (available only to Hosei students)

2) According to the Standards for the Establishment of Universities, the minimum time of preparation and review required to earn two credits for a lecture or seminar is four hours per session.

【成績評価の方法と基準】Grading criteria
Evaluation is done on a continuous basis. At each session, it will be carried out on two elements: attendance (45%) and active participation in class (45%). The student's investment during the semester as well as remarks on mistakes made by the teacher will always be welcome and taken into account in the grading (10%).

【学生の意見等からの気づき】Changes following student comments
A stable and unlimited internet connection as well as a personalized IT device such as a computer, tablet or smartphone are required. Two LMS platforms are used, of which (1) Google Classroom is mainly used to share documents and (2) learners can check some scores on the Hoppii website. In case of remote courses, video conferencing systems such as Zoom or Google Meet will be used to ensure the educational continuity.
