Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
Phenomena occurring in the aerosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere of the earth surface give human various influences. Tsunamis and crustal deformation associated with the earthquake, global climate change, and the accompanying local erosion and sedimentation bring us not only disasters but also various blessings. Based on the knowledge of the lecture in the spring semester, this lecture explains the mechanism of such phenomena and also discusses associated disasters and their issues.

[Learning Objective]
The goal of this course is to help students understand that the mountains, rivers, and coastal landscapes we see are shaped by both internal and external forces, as well as by human actions, and to help them understand the relationship between geological phenomena and natural disasters by developing an understanding of the Earth's systems and an eye for nature. In addition, students will be exposed to news about natural disasters and disaster prevention measures regularly and will learn to think about the relationship between earth science and society. Students will be required to answer the questions and write down their impressions and questions in each class to evaluate their understanding of the class content, as well as their ability to think logically and express themselves.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students are expected to collect information on recent topics related to tsunamis, crustal movement, climate change, floods, and landslides, regardless of media such as newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

[Grading Criteria/Policies]
1. Content of reaction papers and assignment reports being submitted each time (90%).
2. Attitude toward the class, including active questioning of the instructor (10%).
Only those who attend more than 2/3 of the 14 classes (scheduled) will be evaluated.
