Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
The ground motion of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the Japan Islands are giving a real sense of the living earth. This course explains how the earth has appeared and evolution, and how the earth's actions work from the point of view of solid earth science. Also, this course explains the forecast of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and ask them to understand the possibilities and limitations of earth science to contribute to society.

[Learning Objective]
The goal of this course is to understand how the Earth we live on was created, how our ancestors evolved, global phenomena such as tides and magnetic fields, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions based on the theory of plate tectonics, and various other events related to the Earth. In addition, students will be exposed to news related to earth science regularly, and acquire an attitude of knowing the latest situation in science beyond the scope of the textbook. Students will be evaluated on their understanding of the class content by submitting reaction papers and assignment reports every week.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students are expected to collect information on recent topics related to space, earth, earthquakes, and volcanoes, regardless of media such as newspapers, magazines, and the Internet, and use this information to prepare reports. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

[Grading Criteria/Policies]
1. Content of reaction papers and assignment reports being submitted each time (90%).
2. Attitude toward the class, including active questioning of the instructor (10%).
Only those who attend more than 2/3 of the 14 classes (scheduled) will be evaluated.
