Outline (in English)

 This class surveys the history of the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries. This year, the gender norms and their influence on life and experience of American females will be examined with special care. Students are expected to cultivate balanced sensibilities to different gender norms of different countries in this class.

In this class, students will learn a layered meaning of gender difference having been molded in American society since the colonial period. Also in preparing book reports, students are expected to learn academic writing.


Two book reports are required. One is on Scarlet Letter and the other on Sister Carrie, Both of them are the classics of American Literature. Students are expected to learn how to read novels as historical documents. Besides these two reports, students must submit a few historical maps during the semester. Good reaction papers are welcomed.

 Book reports are evaluated in following points: originality of themes, format, logics, and coherence.
