Outline (in English)

Local documents of Edo period, which can be regarded as cultural heritage exist in all part of Japan.In order to understand the nation and society of Edo period, there is a method to approach from local community through analysis of regional documents.In this course students learn the method of deciphering and analyzing the documents. And through the process, students comprehend formation, operation and maintenance of local communities of Edo period.

The goals to be achieved in this course are the following five points.
・ Understand the significance of regional history research.
・ Understand the significance of the creation and transmission of various modern local documents.
・ Acquire the ability to decipher and analyze local documents.
・ Apprehend modern nations and societies through analysis of local documents.
・ Cultivate a perspective to think about today's community development and local culture.

Assignment:
Before the class, please check the words you do not understand in the dictionary to be able to understand handouts. The standard preparation & review time for this course is 2 hours each.

Glade evaluation: Final exam (80%), usual performance score (20%)
