What do you think of medieval Europe? For some, it was a fascinating time of brave knights and humorous Romanesque art; for others, it was a time of violence, filth and blind faith in Christianity. In this lecture, we will look at the relationship between fact and fiction in medieval Europe, reading historical documents and considering together the meaning of knowing the past.

Learning Objectives:
The goals of this course are to acquire a basic knowledge of medieval European history, understand the process by which historical perspectives on medieval European history are developed, and understand the role of historical sources in the construction of fact and fiction.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Students are expected to read the assigned sections of the textbook before class and write a short report after class.

Grading Criteria/Policy:
Short reports: 20%, Term-end report: 80%
