Outline (in English)

In this lesson, we will learn how to research and read historical materials of the modern history of Japan. Also, think about Japanese diplomacy in historical materials.
Specifically, we will learn how to find and analyze documents such as diplomatic records, diaries, letters, reports, memoirs.
In 1937, Japan and China started a general war. The diplomatic negotiations between Japan and China had a great influence not only on the war itself but also on the way of Japan after the war. We will discuss how did diplomats' perceptions and diplomatic approaches influence China-Japan relations? And think about the possibility of diplomacy in the era of war.
The goals of this course are to learn how to read the archives on domestic and foreign policy and understand the path that modern Japan has taken. Students will also understand the characteristics of diplomacy, the relationship between domestic and foreign policy, and the various factors that influence foreign policy.
Students will be expected to read the assigned reference books before and after class meetings. It is important to review the distributed historical materials. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following :
Term-end examination: 50%、Short reports :30%、in class contribution: 20%.
